about
I started writing this song back in BC while I was reading Mathias Énard’s beautiful novel, Compass. The title of the song is pulled directly from the book, a part of the sentence that stuck with me and never left. It’s a novel that follows an insomniac musicologist on his sickbed as he drifts between dreams and memories, at the centre of it his love, Sarah, who got away, but not without a lifetime of fond memories travelling through the middle east and europe, studying music and various composers and their contributions to the world, falling in and out of love, finding themselves at the end of the world, realizing life rarely works out the way we planned. It’s a novel rich in mood and erudition, and I found myself recording this song without realizing how directly influenced it was by the book. As I continued working on it, I realized how closely related the two were, and how much I was pulling from my emotions reading the novel, and titled it with that sentence that stuck so close to my heart. I hope you enjoy. I hope the song is as half as evocative as reading that book was for me. Thanks as always to everyone who takes the time to listen and engage.
Produced in my home studio using a Prophet-6, Grandmother, Hydrasynth, and Ableton.
